Human-Centred Design + Creative Collaboration

Do you find some meetings feel unproductive? Are you struggling with generating new ideas? In this full-day workshop, we’ll begin with an overview of human-centred design: what it is, how it works, and what the go-to methods are. We’ll then spend the afternoon learning the concepts and practicing the skills needed for the production of new and useful ideas. Along with a hands-on experience of using human-centred design to solve a sample problem, we’ll also deep dive into creativity and collaboration.

What you’ll learn

  • How to apply design to complex problems.

  • What the fundamentals of each stage of the design process are, plus additional tools and skills for scoping project work, asking better questions, increasing your creative output, learning more from your prototypes, and communicating your findings.

  • How to produce more and better ideas, solo or in groups.

  • How to find inspiration and get unstuck during ideation.

What you’ll do

  • Experience the full design cycle by solving a sample problem in small groups comprised of other course participants.

  • Revisit each stage of the design process to practice with additional tools and learn more about when and how to apply them.

  • Generate new and useful ideas, individually and in a group.

What you’ll get

  • A human-centred design workbook that describes each stage of the design process. Consider this your reference guide/cheat sheet, complete with helpful background information about the design process and worksheets for you to use during practice.  

  • Overlap’s own human-centred design card deck, featuring helpful prompts for each stage of the design process.

  • A set of Overlap's Process Cards that offer step-by-step instructions for our most used design activities.

  • An infographic that explains the human-centred design process.

  • A set of our most used worksheets: Problem Brief, Empathy Map, Journey Map, Idea Brief, Testing Brief, Challenge Brief, and Feedback Grid.

  • A small collection of our favourite design thinking books to help you deepen your design practice, including Gamestorming, Art of Focused Conversation, The Facilitative Way, and Change by Design, and a curated list for further reading.

Human-Centred Design + Facilitation


Have you ever been in a meeting where you only hear from the same few people? What about a meeting that gets off track? In this full-day workshop, we’ll begin by learning about human-centred design—what it is, how it works, and what the go-to methods are. Then we’ll switch gears and learn about the focused conversation method of facilitation. The ORID framework structures sessions with progressive levels of questions —starting with Objective questions to establish relevant facts, followed by Reflective questions to explore the emotional impact of the topic, then Interpretive questions to surface connections and insights, and concluding with Decisional questions to settle on concrete next steps. 

What you’ll learn

  • How to apply design to complex problems.

  • What the fundamentals of each stage of the design process are, plus additional tools and skills for scoping project work, asking better questions, increasing your creative output, learning more from your prototypes, and communicating your findings.

  • How to effectively use ORID-style focused conversations to design a meeting or deliver a reflective close to a session.

What you’ll do

  • Experience the full design cycle by solving a sample problem in small groups comprised of other course participants.

  • Revisit each stage of the design process to practice with additional tools and learn more about when and how to apply them.

  • Move a group along the different levels of the ORID framework using the questions you created.

 What you’ll get

  • A human-centred design workbook that describes each stage of the design process. Consider this your reference guide/cheat sheet, complete with helpful background information about the design process and worksheets for you to use during practice.

Human-Centred Design + Group Decision-Making

Is it difficult for your teammates to reach an agreement on something? Are too many opinions and ideas affecting your ability to make decisions? In this full-day workshop, we’ll learn about human-centred design—what it is, how it works, and what the go-to methods are. We’ll then extend the practice with Overlap’s favourite technique for surfacing, combining, improving, and prioritizing the best insights a group has to offer using a Card Workshop.

The Card Workshop is a wonderful way to ensure all voices in the room are heard. It’s also a great way for people with opposing views to reach consensus.

What you’ll learn

  • How to apply design to complex problems.

  • What the fundamentals of each stage of the design process are, plus additional tools and skills for scoping project work, asking better questions, increasing your creative output, learning more from your prototypes, and communicating your findings.

  • How to facilitate a card workshop.

  • Develop group insights, planning, alignment, and buy-in during activities that include strategic planning and community engagement.

What you’ll do

  • Experience the full design cycle by solving a sample problem in small groups comprised of other course participants.

  • Revisit each stage of the design process to practice with additional tools and learn more about when and how to apply them.

  • Lead a card workshop facilitation.

What you’ll get

  • A human-centred design workbook that describes each stage of the design process. Consider this your reference guide/cheat sheet, complete with helpful background information about the design process and worksheets for you to use during practice.
