A half-day grounding in the ethical practice of human-centred design research, consistent with the principles laid out by the Government of Canada’s Tri-Council Policy Statement 2 (TCPS-2). Participants will complete the TCPS-2 self-guided tutorial in advance to familiarize themselves with the principles. Together we will debrief on and extend the core principles of ethical research—respect for persons, concern for welfare, justice—to typical design research activities, including surveys, stakeholder labs, community engagement, and journey mapping. Topics will include privacy protection, informed consent, aligning design research with the consent and privacy concerns of clients and other partner organizations, communicating with participants, clients, and the general public about ethical practices, and the need for heightened oversight in situations such as working with sensitive information and/or vulnerable populations. Designed primarily with the Transformation Design team in mind, this session is exclusively for Overlappers who want to increase their competence in research, but can be customized for client organizations.
