We believe better is absolutely possible.
Overlap is a compassionate, clever, creative Canadian consulting firm using human-centred design to help organizations make headway on the problems that matter most to them. We conduct qualitative research for—and with—our clients to draw out insights, generate relevant ideas, and road-test practical solutions. Every day, we co-design solutions with the people who know their problems best.
An organization’s culture is the practical expression of its ideals, priorities, ambition and capacity. Here’s what matters most to us at Overlap.
We care deeply about vulnerable populations and building communities. It is the reason we come to work every day. It motivates us. It guides us in choosing what we work on and who we partner with.
Our mission is to democratize human-centred design. Our work builds capacity in people who create products, services, organizations, and systems that put people and planet first.
Our values and foundations guide—and maybe predict—what we’ll do when the unexpected happens. Which unexpected opportunities we grab. What last-minute invitations we decline. How we step up in an emergency. When we apologize and how we make things right. Who takes the lead when the leadership can’t. What we can commit to without consultation or permission. Which direction we turn when the map’s incomplete or we’ve gone off-road completely.
Our values guide how we behave as individuals. At Overlap, we value creativity, empathy, collaboration, change, curiosity, dependability, and going all-in. Our foundations guide how we behave as Overlap. Overlap is founded on a culture of innovation, context-sensitivity, impartiality, ambition, idealism, trust, great teams, and balance.
We believe that Better is Absolutely Possible and this plays out across every single thing that we do at Overlap. And that’s why people bring us their toughest problems.
As a small business, we’re not waiting until we get big and rich to support the causes that matter to us most. We believe in ‘Philanthrepreneurship’—approaching our philanthropic and community giving with an entrepreneurial mindset. We try to make good corporate citizenship an everyday practice, not a donation cheque at the end of the fiscal year.
Overlap President and Chief Relationship Officer, Lisa Grogan, is a member of UNICEF Canada’s ‘25th Team’, a 60-member women’s leadership group supporting maternal health and childhood well-being initiatives in five developing countries.
This isn’t just about leadership—Overlappers are all engaged and community minded. Our team volunteers all the time (because they want to, not because we tell them to), such as for House of Friendship and CMHA ‘Ride Don’t Hide’.
